Isard

The isard, scientifically known as Rupicapra pyrenaica, is a species of goat-antelope native to the Pyrenees mountains and other mountainous regions of southwestern Europe. It is closely related to the chamois. There are three recognized subspecies of isard: the Pyrenean isard (Rupicapra pyrenaica pyrenaica), the Cantabrian isard (Rupicapra pyrenaica parva), and the Tatra isard (Rupicapra pyrenaica ornata).

Isards are characterized by their slender build, short horns that curve backward, and a thick, woolly coat that changes color seasonally, typically ranging from reddish-brown in summer to dark brown or grayish in winter. They are well-adapted to life in steep, rocky terrains, possessing specialized hooves for gripping uneven surfaces. Their diet primarily consists of grasses, herbs, and lichens.

These animals are social and live in herds, with the composition varying by season. They are generally shy and elusive, often observed grazing on high mountain pastures during the day and seeking shelter in denser vegetation or rocky outcrops at night. Isards play a role in the alpine ecosystem as herbivores.

Conservation efforts are in place for the isard, particularly for the Cantabrian subspecies, which is considered vulnerable. Habitat loss, fragmentation, and hunting have historically impacted their populations. However, with increased protection and habitat management, some populations have shown signs of recovery.
