Inslagsgarn

Inslagsgarn is the yarn used for the weft in weaving, the thread that is inserted across the loom to bind the warp threads into fabric. The warp threads remain under tension while the inslagsgarn is carried over and under them, usually by a shuttle on traditional looms, and then beaten into place by the reed to create a new weft shot. The weft defines many properties of the finished fabric, including surface texture, density, hand and drape, and it interacts with the warp to determine strength and elasticity.

Materials and forms: inslagsgarn can be made from natural fibers such as cotton, wool, linen or silk, or from synthetic fibers such as polyester, nylon or blends. It can be single or plied, of various yarn counts, and is often sized to reduce friction on the loom. The choice of fiber, twist and thickness affects fabric evenness, appearance and feel.

Applications and variations: inslagsgarn is used in virtually all woven fabrics, from lightweight muslin to heavy upholstery fabrics, as well as in tapestry and decorative weaves. In patterned textiles, the weft may be dyed or colored to create contrast with the warp, while in plain fabrics it may be chosen to match or complement the warp.

Care and processing: preparation of the weft yarn may include sizing and pre-winding on bobbins or shuttles, and subsequent washing and finishing steps influence final fabric behavior and appearance.
