Evenness is a term used across disciplines to describe how evenly a quantity is distributed across categories or range of values. In mathematics and related fields, the notion of evenness is tied to parity and symmetry. In number theory, an integer is even if it is divisible by 2. The parity of numbers governs arithmetic: the sum or difference of two even numbers is even, the sum of two odd numbers is even, and the sum of an even and an odd number is odd. A function may be described as even if f(-x) = f(x), exhibiting symmetry about the vertical axis.

Beyond numbers, the concept appears in ecology and statistics as a measure of distributional evenness among categories or species. In community ecology, evenness quantifies how equal abundances are across species. A common measure is Pielou's evenness J' = H'/Hmax, where H' is the Shannon entropy of species abundances and Hmax = ln(S). Values near 1 indicate a uniform distribution of individuals; values near 0 indicate dominance by a few species. Similar ideas are used with Simpson's index.

In statistics and information theory, high evenness corresponds to high entropy, reflecting greater uncertainty or fairness in the distribution. In computer science and operations research, evenness informs load balancing and resource allocation, aiming to avoid concentration of work or data.

Applications include evaluating biodiversity, experimental design, and randomized algorithms. The term retains flexibility, with precise meaning defined per field, but generally denotes lack of skew or bias in distribution.
