Innovatiewaarde

Innovatiewaarde is a concept in Dutch-language discussions of innovation that denotes the total value generated by innovation efforts. It covers economic gains, social benefits, and environmental improvements linked to new products, processes, business models, or governance arrangements. Because it is not a formal metric, its meaning varies with context, organization, and goals.

Typically, innovatiewaarde is viewed along multiple dimensions: economic value such as productivity gains, revenue growth, or cost reduction; social value including job creation, improved user well-being, and inclusive access; environmental value through resource efficiency, emissions reductions, and sustainable practices; strategic value in terms of enhanced competitiveness, resilience, and capability development; and knowledge value through learning, new competencies, and knowledge spillovers.

Measurement approaches combine financial indicators (ROI, NPV, ROIC) with non-financial metrics (customer impact, adoption rate, user satisfaction), and sustainability indicators. Frameworks such as the balanced scorecard or impact assessment methods are commonly used to capture innovatiewaarde across dimensions. In policy and program evaluation, impact metrics and cost-benefit analyses may be applied.

In practice, innovatiewaarde is used to justify investments in research and development, to compare innovation programs, or to guide strategy. It is also a topic of academic debate, with critique that value is context-dependent and difficult to quantify, and that long time horizons may obscure short-term results.
