Infotehnoloogiavõrgud, often referred to as IT networks, are systems that enable the connection and communication between multiple computing devices and other electronic hardware. These networks allow for the sharing of resources, data, and services. The fundamental components of an IT network include devices such as computers, servers, routers, switches, and modems, along with the transmission media that carry the data, such as cables or wireless signals.

Networks can be classified based on their geographical scope, with the most common types being Local Area Networks (LANs), Wide Area Networks (WANs), and Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs). LANs typically cover a small area like an office or home, while WANs span larger distances, connecting multiple LANs across cities, countries, or even continents. MANs fall in between, covering a metropolitan area.

The primary functions of IT networks are communication, resource sharing, and access to information. They facilitate the exchange of electronic mail, instant messaging, and voice and video calls. Resource sharing allows multiple users to access shared printers, storage devices, and software applications. Furthermore, networks provide access to vast amounts of information through the internet.

Network protocols, such as TCP/IP, define the rules and standards for data transmission, ensuring that devices can communicate effectively. Network security is a critical aspect, involving measures to protect data and resources from unauthorized access, modification, or destruction, employing firewalls, encryption, and authentication methods. The design and management of IT networks are crucial for the efficient and reliable operation of modern businesses and communication systems.
