Inertiosensoreihin refers to inertial sensors, devices that measure motion and orientation by detecting changes in acceleration and angular velocity. These sensors typically include accelerometers, gyroscopes, and often magnetometers, and they convert mechanical motions into electrical signals that can be interpreted by microcontrollers and software.

The core technology is based on microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), where tiny mechanical structures vibrate or deflect under dynamic forces. Modern MEMS accelerometers can detect acceleration with sub‑g sensitivity, while MEMS gyroscopes measure angular rates with resolutions below a degree per second. Magnetometers, another common component, provide heading information by sensing the Earth’s magnetic field, allowing full three‑axis orientation estimation when fused with the other two sensor types.

Inertial sensors are widely used in navigation and guidance systems. In mobile phones and gaming controllers they provide motion tracking and tilt detection. In automotive safety systems they contribute to electronic stability control and rollover detection. Unmanned aerial vehicles and autonomous robots rely on inertial measurement units (IMUs) for attitude stabilization and dead‑reckoning navigation when GPS signals are weak or unavailable. The sensors also find applications in health monitoring, virtual reality, and industrial process control.

Accuracy is limited by bias instability, scale‑factor errors and temperature drift. To mitigate these issues, inertial data is typically fused with external sensors such as GPS, vision, or barometric pressure sensors through algorithms like the Kalman filter. Continuous calibration routines are also applied, especially in high‑precision applications.

Future developments focus on improving power consumption, scale‑factor linearity, and reducing sensor size. Integration of multiple sensing modalities onto a single chip and on‑chip digital signal processing are expected to broaden the use of inertial sensors in consumer electronics and industrial automation.
