Indoorveld

Indoorveld is a term used in Dutch- and Afrikaans-speaking contexts to describe an indoor playing area that serves as a substitute for an outdoor field for field-based sports. It can refer to the playing surface itself or to the enclosed facility that houses it.

Construction and design vary by sport and venue but share common features. An indoorveld typically uses a flat, rectangular surface made from artificial turf, synthetic grass, wood, or modular flooring. The surface is marked with sport-specific lines and is surrounded by walls or boards to keep the ball in play. Facilities may include goals, nets, or posts, appropriate lighting, ventilation, safety padding, and spectator seating or viewing areas. Many indoorvelds are part of multi-sport centers or community venues and can be configured to accommodate different activities through movable markings or partitions.

Sports commonly played on an indoorveld include futsal, indoor hockey or floor hockey, handball, and other indoor ball sports, as well as training and recreational play for youth and adults. The exact layout, dimensions, and equipment depend on the sport and local regulations, so venues often host multiple activities in rotating schedules.

In practice, indoorvelds are used for practice, leagues, tournaments, and physical education, especially when outdoor facilities are unavailable due to weather or space constraints.
