Indium oxide (In2O3) serves as a transparent conductor and is employed in sensors and coatings. Indium is also used in various low-melting-point solders and specialty alloys, often to enable low-temperature bonding in electronics.

Properties relevant to indium-containing materials vary by form. Indium itself is a soft, ductile post-transition metal with a relatively low melting point. Its compounds can offer electrical conductivity, optical transparency, or semiconducting behavior, enabling diverse applications in information technology, communications, and sensing.

Safety and environmental considerations include potential health risks from inhalation of indium compounds, which can affect the lungs with prolonged exposure. Proper industrial hygiene, ventilation, and handling protocols are important. Because indium production is geographically concentrated, supply security and recycling of indium-containing materials are notable considerations for industry and policy.
