The INR system was introduced to ensure consistency and comparability of PT results across different laboratories and healthcare settings.

The INR value is calculated by dividing the patient’s PT by a reference PT (international sensitivity index, or ISI) raised to the power of the international sensitivity index. This formula accounts for variations in reagents and instruments used in different laboratories. An INR of 1.0 generally indicates normal clotting function, while higher values suggest increased bleeding risk due to impaired coagulation. Conversely, lower INR values may indicate a tendency toward thrombosis.
