IFCExport

IFCExport refers to the functionality in building information modeling (BIM) software that generates Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) files for data exchange. An IFC file is a neutral, open-standard representation intended to support interoperability among disparate design, engineering, and construction tools. The export process preserves geometric information, spatial relationships, and semantically tagged data, and typically produces files with the .ifc extension.

Export options commonly cover the IFC schema version (such as IFC2x3, IFC4, or IFC4x1), model view definitions (MVDs), and mapping of native object types to IFC entities. Users can control the inclusion of materials, quantities, classifications, and property sets, along with units and coordinate systems. Some exporters also support exporting linked models, as-built information, and contingent properties.

The typical workflow involves preparing the model to reduce nonessential data, selecting an appropriate IFC export preset, configuring version and MVD, performing the export, and validating the resulting file in downstream tools. Many BIM applications offer presets aligned with common pipelines or project requirements to streamline the process.

Limitations arise from differences between the source model and the IFC schema. Some proprietary properties may not map directly and require manual mapping; very large or complex models can result in performance issues or larger file sizes. Final fidelity depends on the exporter, the source model, and the chosen IFC version and MVD.
