Hätäjarrutus is a Finnish term that translates to "emergency braking" in English. It refers to the forceful application of brakes in a vehicle to bring it to a stop as quickly as possible. This action is typically undertaken when a driver perceives an immediate and unavoidable danger, such as a sudden obstacle in the road, a pedestrian stepping out unexpectedly, or another vehicle making a sudden maneuver. The primary goal of an emergency brake is to minimize the distance traveled before coming to a complete stop, thereby reducing the likelihood or severity of a collision.

Modern vehicles equipped with anti-lock braking systems (ABS) or electronic stability control (ESC) can assist drivers during an emergency brake. ABS prevents the wheels from locking up during hard braking, allowing the driver to maintain steering control. ESC helps to prevent skidding and maintain stability. In vehicles without these systems, an emergency brake often involves applying maximum pressure to the brake pedal, which can lead to wheel lock-up and a loss of steering control, especially on slippery surfaces. Drivers are trained to react to hazardous situations by applying the brakes firmly and, if possible, steering around the obstacle if a collision cannot be avoided.
