Hylodes

Hylodes is a genus of South American frogs belonging to the family Hylidae. These frogs are commonly known as rubber frogs or torrent frogs due to their widespread distribution in humid forests and their association with fast-flowing streams. The genus currently comprises several recognized species, though taxonomic classifications are subject to ongoing research and revision.

Members of the Hylodes genus are typically small to medium-sized anurans. They are characterized by their relatively slender bodies, long hind limbs adapted for jumping, and prominent eyes. Their coloration varies among species, often featuring cryptic patterns of greens, browns, and grays that aid in camouflage within their natural habitats. Many species exhibit distinctive markings or patterns on their dorsal surfaces or flanks.

Hylodes frogs are primarily found in the Atlantic Forest and other humid forest regions of eastern and southeastern Brazil, as well as parts of Paraguay and Argentina. They are predominantly terrestrial or semi-aquatic, often inhabiting the leaf litter or vegetation near streams and rivers. Their reproductive behavior commonly involves direct development, meaning that eggs hatch into small froglets, bypassing a free-swimming tadpole stage. This adaptation is thought to be advantageous in the lotic environments where they reside. Their diet consists mainly of small invertebrates.
