Hyllplan

Hyllplan is a horizontal board that forms a shelf in furniture and storage systems. In Swedish and Nordic usage, the term refers to the flat surface on which items are placed, typically supported by side panels, cleats, or brackets. Hyllplan are used in bookcases, cabinets, wardrobes, and shelving units, and can be fixed or adjustable.

Materials and construction vary. Commonly, hyllplan are made from wood-based panels such as particleboard, MDF, or plywood, often with veneer or laminate finishes. Solid wood or metal are also used, especially for higher-end or industrial designs. Thicknesses typically range from about 16 to 28 millimeters in domestic furniture, with thicker boards chosen for greater load capacity. Length and width depend on the furniture dimensions; many systems use standardized widths and supports to accommodate different layouts.

Mounting methods differ. Fixed hyllplan are screwed or cleated to side panels or brackets, sometimes with a molded edge or lip to help keep items in place. Adjustable hyllplan use shelf pins or a vertical standard with regularly spaced holes, allowing the boards to be moved to different heights. In built-in installations, hyllplan may be supported by wall cleats or integrated shelving systems designed for modular adjustments.

Design and practical considerations. Load capacity depends on material, thickness, span, and supports, so planning for weight distribution is important. For damp areas, moisture-resistant materials or finishes improve longevity. Accurate measurement and alignment prevent warping and ensure stable, level shelves. Hyllplan are a central element in the functionality and flexibility of many types of cabinets and storage systems.
