Storage containers, organizers, textiles like towels and table linens, and cleaning tools and supplies are also commonly considered housewares.

Design and manufacture emphasize durability, safety for food contact, and ease of use. Materials commonly used include stainless steel, cast iron, copper, ceramic and glass for cookware; porcelain and stoneware for dinnerware; wood, silicone, and plastic for utensils; and fabric for textiles. Care requirements and compatibility with dishwashers, ovens, or microwaves vary by item.

Housewares are distributed through department stores, specialty home stores, and online retailers, with supply chains often tied to seasonal shopping cycles. Trends in housewares include eco-friendly and durable materials, modular storage systems, and multi-functional design to reduce clutter. The term is sometimes broadened to include home goods that are not strictly performance related, such as decorative items, though many retailers distinguish core functional items from ornament.
