Hound

A hound is a type of domestic dog bred for hunting. In common usage, the term covers a broad range of breeds that locate game by scent or by sight. Hounds are typically distinguished from other working dog groups by their hunting instincts, physical traits, and vocalizations, and they are classified in various kennel clubs under the Hound Group.

Scent hounds track prey primarily by smell. They tend to have highly developed olfactory abilities, long ears, and loose facial skin that helps hold scent near the nose. These dogs often work in packs or trails, following a scent for extended distances and emitting baying or howls when on the trail. They are usually sturdy and endurance-oriented rather than extremely fast. Common scent hounds include the bloodhound, beagle, basset hound, and foxhound.

Sighthounds, also known as chase or sight-hunting hounds, pursue prey by visual contact and speed. They are typically lean and fast, with long legs and deep chests built for rapid sprints. Sighthounds rely on sight rather than scent to locate quarry and often hunt by breaking line of sight briefly before the chase. Examples include the greyhound, Afghan hound, borzoi, saluki, and whippet.

In modern practice, hounds are kept for hunting, trail work, search and rescue, and companionship. They require training that accounts for their strong instincts, high energy, and, in some breeds, persistent vocalization.
