Holzhaus

Holzhaus, literally “wood house” in German, refers to a dwelling whose primary structural material is wood. The term encompasses several construction traditions, including log houses, timber-frame houses, and solid-wood panel constructions. Each type uses wood differently to carry loads and enclose space.

Historically common in boreal and temperate regions, wooden houses have been valued for availability, workability, and natural insulation. In log houses, logs are laid horizontally with interlocking corners to form walls. Timber-frame houses use a heavy timber skeleton with non-load-bearing infill such as plaster or brick. Solid-wood or engineered wood panels provide continuous wall surfaces. Modern developments include mass timber products like cross-laminated timber and glue-laminated timber, enabling taller and faster construction.

Durability and fire safety depend on design, treatment, and local codes. Wood must be protected from moisture and pests and is often paired with moisture barriers, ventilation, and fire-resistant detailing. Contemporary Holzhaus emphasize energy efficiency through high levels of insulation, air tightness, and controlled ventilation or heat-recovery systems.

Environmental aspects: wood is renewable when sourced from responsibly managed forests. Wooden houses can have lower embodied energy than concrete or steel and store carbon during use. Certification schemes such as FSC and PEFC promote sustainable sourcing.

In different regions, Holzhaus reflect local traditions: Central Europe features timber-frame or Fachwerk; Scandinavia emphasizes log or panel constructions; North America uses balloon or platform framing. Today, many projects combine traditional aesthetics with prefabrication and mass-timber technologies to improve speed and sustainability.
