Hjørnetænder

Hjørnetænder, also known as canines, are a type of tooth found in mammals located between the incisors and the premolars. In humans, there are four hjørnetænder, one in each quadrant of the mouth. They are typically the longest and sharpest teeth in the dental arch. The name "hjørnetænder" derives from their prominence and pointed shape, resembling the teeth of canids like dogs.

The primary function of hjørnetænder is to tear food. Their pointed crowns are well-suited for piercing and ripping tougher materials, which is particularly advantageous for omnivorous and carnivorous diets. In humans, their role in tearing is less pronounced than in their wild ancestors, but they still play a part in the initial breakdown of food. They also help guide the lower jaw into place during chewing.

The development of hjørnetænder begins during childhood, with the primary, or baby, hjørnetænder erupting around 16 to 20 months of age. The permanent hjørnetænder typically emerge between the ages of 11 and 13, often replacing the deciduous teeth. Their position at the corners of the mouth gives them a distinctive visual presence and contributes to the overall structure and aesthetics of the smile. The enamel of hjørnetænder is generally strong, but like all teeth, they are susceptible to decay and wear.
