Herpailurus

Herpailurus is a genus of wild cats native to South America. The only living species in this genus is Herpailurus yagouaroundi, commonly known as the jaguarundi. This small to medium-sized feline is found in a wide range of habitats, from tropical rainforests and swamps to thorny scrublands and dry deciduous forests.

The jaguarundi is characterized by its slender body, small, flattened head, and uniformly colored fur, which can range from reddish-brown to dark gray or black. Unlike many other cats, their ears are short and rounded. They are primarily terrestrial, spending most of their time on the ground, but are also capable climbers and swimmers.

Herpailurus yagouaroundi is a solitary and diurnal or crepuscular hunter, meaning it is most active during the day or at dawn and dusk. Its diet consists mainly of small mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. They are known for their agility and speed, despite their somewhat elongated body shape.

Historically, the jaguarundi was sometimes classified in the genus Felis or Puma, but genetic studies have placed it within its own genus, Herpailurus. This classification reflects its unique evolutionary lineage within the Felidae family. The conservation status of the jaguarundi varies across its range, with some populations facing threats from habitat loss and fragmentation.
