Hehkutusprosessit, or annealing processes, are heat treatments applied to materials, primarily metals and glass, to alter their physical and mechanical properties. The fundamental principle involves heating the material to a specific temperature, holding it there for a predetermined duration, and then cooling it slowly. This controlled heating and cooling cycle is designed to relieve internal stresses, increase ductility, reduce hardness, and improve machinability or formability.

In metallurgy, annealing is commonly used to soften cold-worked metals, making them easier to shape or work. By heating the metal, the atoms gain enough energy to rearrange themselves into a more stable, less strained crystalline structure. Upon slow cooling, this new structure is maintained, resulting in a softer, more pliable material. Different types of annealing exist, such as full annealing, process annealing, and spheroidizing, each tailored to achieve specific microstructural changes and property modifications.

For glass, annealing is crucial for preventing fracture. When glass cools too rapidly, internal stresses develop due to uneven contraction. Annealing involves heating the glass to a temperature just above its strain point, allowing these stresses to dissipate, and then cooling it very gradually. This controlled cooling minimizes residual stress, making the glass more resistant to breakage from thermal shock or mechanical impact. The slow cooling process in annealing is the key differentiator from other heat treatments like quenching, which aims to harden materials through rapid cooling.
