The genus is named after the English botanist Adrian Haworth. Haworthias are closely related to other Aloes and Gasterias, and can sometimes be difficult to distinguish from them, especially in their juvenile stages. They are typically found in arid or semi-arid regions, often growing in rocky outcrops or sandy soils, where they have adapted to survive long periods of drought.

There are many species and subspecies within the Haworthia genus, each with distinct characteristics. Some common examples include Haworthia fasciata, known for its prominent white tubercles on the underside of its leaves, and Haworthia cooperi, which has translucent, windowed leaf tips. The patterns on Haworthia leaves can range from stripes and dots to more complex reticulations, serving as camouflage in their natural habitat and as a source of aesthetic appeal for collectors.

Haworthias are relatively easy to care for. They prefer bright, indirect light and well-draining soil. Overwatering is a common mistake, and it's best to allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. They can be propagated by offsets or leaf cuttings. Their small size makes them ideal for terrariums or small pots, and they add a touch of architectural beauty to any collection of succulents.
