Hausnotrufsysteme, also known as emergency call systems, are devices designed to provide immediate assistance in case of an emergency. They are commonly used by elderly individuals, people with chronic illnesses, or those living alone, offering a sense of security and independence. A typical system consists of a base station, which connects to a landline or mobile network, and a wearable alarm button, usually a pendant or wristband.

When a user presses the alarm button, the base station sends a signal to a monitoring center. Trained personnel at the center then assess the situation. They may attempt to contact the user via the base station's speakerphone to understand the nature of the emergency. If there is no response or if the situation requires immediate attention, the monitoring center will contact pre-determined emergency contacts, such as family members, neighbors, or directly dispatch emergency services like ambulances or police.

These systems can be powered by mains electricity and often have a battery backup to ensure functionality during power outages. Some advanced systems also include fall detection capabilities, automatically triggering an alarm if a fall is detected, even if the user is unable to press the button themselves. Installation is usually straightforward, and many providers offer rental or purchase options, along with various service plans depending on the level of monitoring required.
