Hauptsaison

Hauptsaison, literally "main season," is a term used in German-speaking tourism and commerce to denote the period of strongest demand within a year for a destination, service, or product. The exact timing is regionally dependent; it commonly aligns with school holidays, favorable weather, and major events, but in some destinations the Hauptsaison occurs in winter (for ski areas) and in others during the summer.

During Hauptsaison, capacity constraints become more pronounced: hotel rooms, flights, and other services sell out more quickly; prices tend to rise; providers may extend hours and hire additional staff. The term is often contrasted with Nebensaison (off-season) and Zwischensaison or shoulder season, which describe periods of lower or moderate demand.

Implications: For travelers, Hauptsaison requires early planning and budgeting for higher costs and potential crowds. For businesses, it requires capacity planning, pricing strategies, and sometimes crowd management or sustainability measures to mitigate impact.
