Harhautushyökkäyksiä, known in English as "spoofing attacks," are a type of cyberattack where a malicious actor disguises their communication as originating from a trusted or legitimate source. The goal is to deceive the recipient into taking an action they otherwise wouldn't, such as revealing sensitive information or downloading malware. This deception can occur through various communication channels, including email, IP addresses, caller ID, and even website URLs.

One common form of spoofing is email spoofing, where an attacker fakes the sender's address to make an email appear to come from a known contact or reputable organization. This is often used in phishing scams to trick users into clicking malicious links or providing personal data. Similarly, IP spoofing involves altering the source IP address in network packets to impersonate another device or server. This can be used to bypass security measures or launch denial-of-service attacks.

Caller ID spoofing allows attackers to change the name and number displayed on a recipient's phone, making it seem like a legitimate call is coming in. This is frequently employed in vishing (voice phishing) attacks. Website URL spoofing involves creating fake websites that closely resemble legitimate ones, often with slight misspellings or different domain extensions, to trick users into entering their login credentials.

Defending against spoofing attacks involves a multi-layered approach. For individuals, this includes being cautious of unsolicited communications, verifying sender identities, avoiding clicking on suspicious links, and using strong, unique passwords. For organizations, implementing technical defenses such as email authentication protocols (SPF, DKIM, DMARC), network intrusion detection systems, and robust security awareness training for employees are crucial.
