Handbills

A handbill is a single-page printed notice, advertisement, or public announcement that is distributed by hand or posted in public places. It is typically inexpensive to produce, often printed on standard paper, and designed to be quickly read and shared. Handbills are distinct from longer pamphlets or booklets because they convey a concise message on one sheet.

Historically, handbills emerged with affordable printing and the growth of urban centers. They were a common means of advertising events, sales, services, and public notices, as well as a tool for political campaigns, labor organizing, and social movements. In many cities, handbills circulated widely in streets, markets, and doorways, providing a rapid, low-cost channel for information before the advent of modern advertising and digital media.

Design and content typically emphasize immediacy and clarity. A handbill usually features a bold headline, a few lines of text with essential details (such as time, place, price, or contact information), and sometimes an image or simple illustration. Because of its ephemeral nature, the layout tends to rely on high contrast and legibility to capture attention at a glance.

Distribution and regulation vary by jurisdiction. Handbills may be handed directly to pedestrians, distributed on sidewalks, or posted on bulletin boards, storefronts, or public notice areas. Some places restrict posting on private property or public poles and impose litter or nuisance rules, with requirements to remove notices after a certain period. With the rise of digital media, many organizations now supplement or replace physical handbills with online flyers and notices.
