Hajusteallergia

Hajusteallergia, also known as fragrance allergy or perfume allergy, is a hypersensitivity reaction to fragrances or perfumes. It is a type of contact dermatitis, a skin inflammation that occurs when the skin comes into contact with an allergen. While often used interchangeably, true allergy to a specific fragrance component is different from fragrance sensitivity, which is a more general intolerance to strong scents causing symptoms like headaches or nausea without an immune system response.

Symptoms of hajusteallergia can vary and typically appear after exposure to scented products. Common skin reactions include redness, itching, rash, blisters, or hives at the site of contact. Beyond skin symptoms, some individuals may experience respiratory issues such as sneezing, coughing, runny nose, or difficulty breathing, especially those with pre-existing conditions like asthma. Headaches, migraines, nausea, and fatigue are also reported, though these are more indicative of fragrance sensitivity.

The allergens are usually found in a wide range of products, including perfumes, colognes, scented soaps, lotions, shampoos, detergents, air fresheners, and cleaning supplies. Essential oils, even those considered natural, can also contain compounds that trigger allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Diagnosis is typically made through a combination of patient history and patch testing, where small amounts of suspected fragrance allergens are applied to the skin under occlusion to observe for a reaction.

Management of hajusteallergia primarily involves avoiding exposure to known triggers. This means carefully reading product labels and choosing fragrance-free or hypoallergenic options. For those with respiratory symptoms or severe reactions, consulting an allergist or dermatologist is recommended for proper diagnosis and management strategies.
