Hadtudományi

Hadtudományi, literally "military science" in Hungarian, is the academic and professional field that studies armed forces, defense policy, strategy, and security. In Hungarian usage the term covers both theoretical inquiry and practical application within military organizations, as well as research and teaching at universities and defense institutions that prepare officers and analyze defense challenges. The scope includes strategic and operational theory, military history, doctrine development, organizational design, logistics, and acquisition, as well as defense resource management and interoperability with allied forces. The field also engages with related disciplines such as international relations, international law, ethics, and cybersecurity, reflecting the multidimensional nature of modern security.

Historically, military science has evolved from ancient and medieval military knowledge into a multidisciplinary field that now includes operations research, systems analysis, and strategic studies. In contemporary contexts, hadtudományi addresses national defense planning, crisis management, civil-military relations, and defense policy analysis, alongside advances in technology and doctrine.

Education and research occur at military academies, polytechnics, and universities, with programs ranging from bachelor’s to doctoral degrees and often carried out within broader defense studies or security studies departments. Research topics commonly cover strategic planning, logistics and sustainment, intelligence studies, military technology, and space and cyber domains.
