HDRforskningen is the field concerned with high dynamic range imaging and rendering, focusing on expanding the range of luminance and color that can be captured, processed, and displayed compared with conventional imaging.

In practice, HDR research covers acquisition methods such as multi-exposure capture and exposure fusion, sensor design for higher dynamic range, and alignment of image sequences to avoid ghosting. It also includes algorithms for reconstructing HDR radiance maps and tone mapping operators that map high dynamic range content to displayable luminance while preserving contrast and detail. Color management and gamut mapping are studied to maintain perceptual consistency across devices.

HDR displays and standards play a central role. HDRforskningen investigates display pipelines, color spaces, and metadata for HDR formats such as HDR10, Dolby Vision, and HLG, as well as real-time processing for video and games. Applications span photography, cinema, broadcasting, virtual reality, and archival imaging.

Challenges include motion, alignment artifacts in multi-exposure techniques, noise amplification in shadows, and temporal inconsistencies in video. Evaluation relies on objective metrics and subjective testing under various viewing conditions. The field is increasingly influenced by machine learning, with neural networks used for tone mapping, HDR reconstruction from limited exposures, and content-aware processing.
