HDDlevyihin is a Finnish term used to refer to the hard disk drive platters—the physical magnetic surfaces on which data is stored. The term combines HDD with levy (platter) and the suffix -iin, which in Finnish can convey direction or targeting, here pointing to the surfaces themselves.

In a typical hard disk drive, data is stored magnetically on circular platters coated with a ferromagnetic recording layer. The platters spin at several thousand revolutions per minute while read/write heads, mounted on a precision actuator, glide very close to the surface on a thin air cushion. The heads access the platters under computer control, translating electrical signals into magnetic patterns and vice versa.
