Platters

A platter is a flat, shallow dish used for serving or presenting food, or a circular disk in a machine that stores information. In dining and hospitality, platters are made from ceramic, porcelain, glass, metal, or wood and vary in shape (round, oval, or oblong) and size—from small serving platters to large presentation pieces. Materials influence handling and care: ceramic and porcelain are typically washed after use; wooden platters require hand washing and occasional oiling; metal and glass platters may be dishwasher safe depending on finish.

In culinary use, a platter describes a composed assortment—such as a meat and cheese platter or antipasto platter—designed for sharing. They are common at buffets and gatherings and can serve as centerpieces on tabletops. In many cuisines, platters help present variety and ease of service.

In technology, the term platter refers to the flat circular disk that stores data in devices such as hard disk drives; multiple platters may spin within a drive. In audio, a turntable uses a rotating platter on which a vinyl record is placed during playback.

The word “platter” also appears in culinary contexts as a generic term for large platters of food and in descriptions of display pieces at events. Although usage overlaps with “plate” and “dish,” platters emphasize presentation and sharing, as well as data storage in modern equipment.
