Hårdvarudefinierade, often translated as hardware-defined, refers to a system or feature where the fundamental behavior and functionality are determined by the underlying physical hardware rather than by software. In such systems, changes to the operational logic typically require physical modifications or replacements of components. This contrasts with software-defined approaches where functionality can be altered through code.

The concept is prevalent in areas like specialized processors, application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs), and field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). For example, a cryptographic operation performed by a dedicated hardware module is hardware-defined; its speed and capabilities are fixed by its design. In contrast, the same operation implemented in software running on a general-purpose CPU is software-defined and can be updated or changed by modifying the software.

Hardware-defined systems often offer superior performance, lower power consumption, and enhanced security for specific tasks due to their optimized design. However, they lack the flexibility of software-defined systems, making them less adaptable to evolving requirements or new standards without significant rework. This trade-off between performance and flexibility is a key consideration when choosing between hardware-defined and software-defined solutions.
