Güsse

Güsse, the plural of Guss, refers to the process of pouring molten material into a mold to form a solid part on cooling. In industry, Güsse also denotes the resulting cast component. While metal casting is the primary use, the term can apply to other pourable materials, though metal remains dominant.

Casting methods range from economical, flexible processes to high-precision production. Sandguss uses a sand mold for large or complex shapes and easy tooling. Druckguss (die casting) injects molten metal under pressure into a metal die, yielding high accuracy and smooth surfaces at high production rates. Feinguss (investment casting) uses a ceramic shell around a wax pattern for detailed parts. Kokillenguss (permanent mold casting) employs reusable metal molds for repeatable quality.

Common materials include Gusseisen (cast iron), Gussstahl (cast steel), and non-ferrous alloys such as aluminum, bronze, and brass. The general Guss workflow includes pattern or mold preparation, melting, pouring, solidification, and finishing—removal from the mold, cleaning, heat treatment, and machining. Quality control targets porosity, shrinkage, cold shuts, misruns, and surface defects, with mold design and process parameters playing central roles.

Applications cover automotive and railway components, machinery parts, pipes and fittings, art and sculpture, and specialized aerospace parts. The foundry industry continues to optimize Guss through materials research, simulation, and automation to improve efficiency and material use.
