Growthrestricted is an adjective used in biology and medicine to describe something whose growth is impeded or limited relative to a normal or expected trajectory. The term is used across disciplines such as obstetrics, cell biology, and agronomy to indicate a reduced rate or extent of growth.

In obstetrics, fetal growth restriction (FGR) or intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) describes a fetus that does not reach its genetically determined growth potential, usually defined as an estimated fetal weight or abdominal circumference below the 10th percentile for gestational age. Causes include placental insufficiency, maternal hypertension, infections, fetal chromosomal or structural anomalies, and lifestyle factors such as smoking or malnutrition. It is associated with increased risks of stillbirth, hypoxia, neonatal complications, and long-term health effects. Diagnosis relies on serial ultrasound measurements and Doppler assessments of fetal and placental circulation. In cell biology, growth restriction refers to decreased cell proliferation due to nutrient deprivation, serum starvation, hypoxia, or contact inhibition. Cells may enter quiescence or senescence, and researchers study these states to understand cell cycle control, metabolism, and stress response pathways, including p53/p21 and mTOR signaling.

In plant science and agriculture, growth restriction can describe stunted growth caused by drought, nutrient deficiency, or genetic dwarfism. Dwarf or semi-dwarf genotypes are often exploited to improve lodging resistance and yield in crops, while environmental or regulatory factors may limit stem elongation or biomass accumulation.

In microbiology, growth restriction can occur under stress conditions or antimicrobial exposure, resulting in slower or arrested microbial growth and altered community dynamics.
