Manufacturing approaches include selective deposition using masking and dynamic shuttering in physical vapor deposition, gradual variation of precursor flow in chemical vapor deposition, thermal diffusion processes, electrochemical deposition with changing current density, and additive manufacturing with multi-material deposition. Metrology tools such as ellipsometry, profilometry, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, and nanoindentation are used to verify gradient profiles and properties.

Typical motivations for gradient coatings include tailoring optical performance (gradients in refractive index or color), improving adhesion and stress distribution to reduce delamination, enhancing corrosion resistance through a gradient from substrate to protective layer, and creating transitions in hardness or wear resistance for components like cutting tools or turbine blades.
