Goalorientedness refers to the tendency to organize one's behavior around pursuing specific objectives. It encompasses establishing clear goals, prioritizing actions, planning steps, monitoring progress, and adapting tactics as needed to improve the likelihood of success. The term can describe a personal trait, a managerial approach, or a design principle in systems and organizations.

In psychology, goal-oriented behavior is central to motivation and performance. The literature on goal setting emphasizes that specific, challenging goals linked to feedback tend to improve task performance, while excessive pressure or poorly defined goals can reduce creativity and increase stress. Distinguishing goal orientation as a trait from situational goal setting is common.

In organizations and technology, goal-orientedness aligns efforts with strategic aims, supports resource allocation, and facilitates evaluation. In project management, it underpins milestones and deliverables, while in artificial intelligence and robotics, goal-directed systems select actions to achieve defined goals, often via planning, search, or reinforcement learning. Metrics include goal attainment rate, time to reach goals, and efficiency of resource use.

Critiques include potential rigidity, neglect of emergent opportunities, and ethical risks if goals are mis-specified or misaligned with broader values. Effective practice usually requires balancing specificity with flexibility, embedding feedback loops, and periodically revisiting goals.
