Gleismanagements, or Gleismanagement in German usage, refers to the planning, allocation and optimization of railway track resources to support safe, reliable and efficient train operations. It encompasses the processes by which rail infrastructure capacity is assessed, tracks are assigned to services, and the timetable is reconciled with maintenance and construction work.

Its core functions include capacity planning (long-, medium- and short-term), track allocation and conflict resolution between competing services, timetable integration, and disruption management. It also covers maintenance planning and construction planning to minimize impacts on service while meeting safety and regulatory requirements. The goal is to maximize track utilization, minimize conflicts and delays, and ensure safe operations within signaling and safety systems.

Organisation

Gleismanagement is typically carried out by the railway infrastructure manager or a dedicated operations control unit within the railway company. Key stakeholders include the infrastructure manager, train operators, dispatchers, and maintenance teams. In practice, track allocation is performed through a combination of formal slot assignment, operational handover, and real-time monitoring in a control center.

Methods and tools

It relies on capacity modelling, scheduling methods and simulation tools, as well as real-time data from signaling, train location, and incidents. Techniques from constraint programming and optimization are used to resolve conflicts and produce feasible, robust plans. Software tools often support graphical visualization of track occupancy (Gleisbelegung) and automatic generation of conflict-free timetable suggestions.

Outcomes and challenges

Effective Gleismanagement reduces delays, improves punctuality, and supports resilience to disruption, but faces challenges from peak demand, partial network failures, and planned maintenance windows. The field is closely linked to overarching rail traffic management, timetable planning and asset management.
