It encompasses the science of glass as a material as well as engineering methods for shaping, finishing, and enhancing glass products, including safety, performance, and aesthetics.

Historically, glass technology dates back to ancient civilizations, but modern practices were transformed by developments such as the float glass process in the 1950s, which produced high-quality flat glass. In German and European industry, Glastechnisch covers both the theoretical study of glass properties and the applied processes used in production facilities.

Core processes include batch preparation and melting of silica-based raw materials, forming methods such as float, drawing, pressing, and blowing, followed by annealing or tempering, surface coatings, chemical strengthening, and careful cooling to control stress. Material properties of interest include clarity, chemical durability, thermal and mechanical strength, and thermal expansion.
