Glassfiberkompositter, also referred to as glass fiber reinforced composites, are composite materials in which glass fiber is the reinforcing phase and a polymeric matrix, such as epoxy, polyester, or vinyl ester, serves as the binder. The fibers provide high tensile strength and stiffness, while the matrix encapsulates the fibers, protects against environmental damage, and distributes loads across the composite.

The concept of fiber reinforced polymers dates back to the early 20th century, but practical, scalable production of glass fiber reinforced composites began in the 1950s with the introduction of glass fiber tow and woven fabrics. Batch and continuous fiber production techniques were refined, leading to commercial availability of laminated panels and molded parts for aerospace, automotive, construction, and sporting goods industries.

Manufacturing processes include hand lay‑up, filament winding, resin transfer molding, compression molding, and pultrusion. Each method balances factors such as part geometry, fiber orientation, cost, and production speed. Hand lay‑up offers design flexibility for complex shapes but is labor‑intensive, whereas pultrusion produces high‑volume, rectangular cross‑section components with excellent dimensional stability.

Glass fiber composites offer a superior strength‑to‑weight ratio compared with many metals and can be engineered for impact resistance, corrosion resistance, and electrical insulation. However, they are not as widely adaptable as carbon fiber composites for extreme performance requirements. Environmental concerns center on unsold inventory, end‑of‑life disposal, and the use of hazardous resins during fabrication.

Ongoing research explores recyclable composite systems, hybrid fiber blends, and nanofiller incorporation to improve mechanical properties, reduce cost, and mitigate environmental impacts.
