Geschwollene

Geschwollene is the inflected form of the German adjective geschwollen, meaning swollen or enlarged. It is used to describe tissues or body parts that have excess fluid, inflammation, or edema. It can function attributively before a noun (eine geschwollene Lippe, geschwollene Füße) or predicatively after a linking verb (Der Arm ist geschwollen).

As an adjective, geschwollen declines to reflect gender, number, and case. Examples: eine geschwollene Lippe (feminine singular, nominative), geschwollene Augen (plural). The base participle geschwollen is also used in compound phrases; in noun form, Geschwollene can appear rare-yet as a capitalized noun referring to “the swollen ones,” but this usage is uncommon.

In medical usage, swelling describes an abnormal increase in tissue volume due to fluid accumulation or inflammatory processes. Swelling is common in extremities (Füße, Hände), face, or joints and may be accompanied by pain, warmth, redness, or restricted movement.

Causes include local trauma or surgery, infections, allergic reactions, insect bites, autoimmune conditions, venous insufficiency, kidney or heart problems, and pregnancy. Diet, salt intake, and certain medications can influence fluid retention and swelling.

Diagnosis and treatment depend on the underlying cause. Minor swelling often improves with rest, elevation, compression, or cold packs. Persistent swelling or swelling with redness, fever, severe pain, or rapid progression warrants medical evaluation. Treatments target the underlying condition and may involve anti-inflammatory drugs, antibiotics for infection, diuretics for edema, or surgical intervention in rare cases.
