Geosäätö

Geosäätö, often translated as "geoclimatization" or "geoclimatic control," refers to the concept of actively and intentionally manipulating Earth's climate system on a large scale. This broad term encompasses a range of proposed technologies and strategies aimed at counteracting climate change or achieving specific desired climatic conditions. While the term itself is not a widely established scientific discipline, it broadly covers ideas associated with geoengineering.

The motivations behind geosäätö are primarily driven by concerns over global warming and its potential consequences, such as rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and ecosystem disruption. Proponents suggest that human intervention may become necessary to stabilize the climate if emissions reduction efforts prove insufficient.

Two main categories of geosäätö are generally discussed. The first is solar radiation management (SRM), which aims to reflect a small fraction of sunlight back into space, thereby cooling the planet. Examples include injecting aerosols into the stratosphere or deploying reflective surfaces in orbit. The second category is carbon dioxide removal (CDR), which focuses on extracting greenhouse gases, particularly CO2, from the atmosphere. Methods under this umbrella include afforestation, bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), and direct air capture (DAC) technologies.

However, geosäätö is a highly controversial topic. Significant concerns exist regarding potential unintended consequences, ethical implications, governance challenges, and the high costs associated with many proposed approaches. Critics also argue that focusing on geosäätö could divert attention and resources from crucial efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at their source. The scientific community is actively researching the feasibility, risks, and benefits of various geosäätö techniques, but widespread deployment remains a distant and debated prospect.
