The concept covers policies, procedures, and technical measures aimed at preventing unauthorized access, disclosure, or loss of information classified as confidential or secret.

The core responsibilities typically include establishing and enforcing information-handling policies, classifying data according to its sensitivity, and managing access controls and secure communications. In addition, a Geheimhaltungseinheit may oversee data protection and encryption practices, physical security of information assets, incident response to leaks or breaches, and the conduct of training and awareness programs for staff. Regular audits and compliance checks are often part of its mandate to ensure alignment with internal standards and external legal requirements.

Organizational placement and governance vary by sector. The unit can be part of a security department, a compliance or risk management office, or the IT security function.
