GNSSsystemene refers to Global Navigation Satellite Systems. These are constellations of satellites that provide autonomous geospatial positioning with global or regional coverage. GNSS allows electronic receivers to determine their location by triangulating signals from these satellites. The most widely known GNSS is the United States' Global Positioning System (GPS). Other major GNSS include Russia's GLONASS, the European Union's Galileo, and China's BeiDou Navigation Satellite System. Each system consists of a network of satellites orbiting Earth, ground control stations, and user receivers.

The satellites transmit signals that carry information about their precise location and the time. A GNSS receiver on the ground picks up signals from multiple satellites. By measuring the time it takes for these signals to arrive, the receiver can calculate its distance from each satellite. With signals from at least four satellites, the receiver can accurately determine its three-dimensional position (latitude, longitude, and altitude) and synchronize its clock with the atomic clocks on board the satellites.

The applications of GNSS are vast and diverse. They are crucial for navigation in vehicles, aircraft, and ships. GNSS is also used in surveying and mapping, precision agriculture, timing for telecommunications networks, disaster management, and scientific research. The accuracy and availability of GNSS have significantly improved over time, with modern systems offering enhanced performance and new features. Multiple GNSS constellations can often be used together to improve accuracy and reliability, especially in challenging environments like urban canyons or mountainous terrain.
