Gåsedun

Gåsedun, in Norwegian, refers to goose down, the soft, fluffy plumage found beneath the outer feathers of geese. It is used as a natural insulating fill in bedding, jackets, sleeping bags and other textiles. Down is typically a byproduct of the goose meat industry and is processed for commercial use.

The defining feature of goose down is its structure. Tiny plumules form clusters that trap air, creating excellent loft and warmth with relatively little weight. Because it has no stiff central quill, goose down remains highly compressible and breathable. Its insulating performance depends on loft, cleanliness, and dryness; when wet, down loses much of its insulating value and takes longer to dry.

In textiles, goose down is often marketed by quality indicators such as fill power, measured in cubic inches per ounce (CUIN). Higher fill power corresponds to greater loft and warmth for the same weight. Common consumer products may use mid-range down, while luxury items use high-fill down, sometimes 600 CUIN and above. Down may be mixed with small amounts of feathers (down/feather ratio) to balance cost, warmth, and durability.

Care guidelines emphasize gentle cleaning and thorough drying to preserve loft. Washing directions vary by product, but generally require mild detergents, low heat or air drying, and occasional reshaping or fluffed cycles to restore loft.

Sustainability and ethics are important considerations. Reputable suppliers may carry certifications such as Responsible Down Standard (RDS) or analogous schemes to ensure animal welfare and traceability. Goose down is biodegradable and renewable, and consumers are advised to choose certified sources when possible.
