Furbelow

Furbelow is a term primarily associated with the distinctive, voluminous ruffles found on the sleeves of certain garments, particularly those worn in the 18th and early 19th centuries. These ruffles were often made from lightweight fabrics such as lace, muslin, or silk and were attached to the underside of the sleeve, extending outward when the arm was raised. The effect created a fluffy, layered appearance, giving the sleeve a fuller, more elaborate look.

The term "furbelow" may also refer to the decorative trim itself, which could be made from various materials, including lace, ribbon, or even woven fabric. These trims were commonly used in women’s fashion during the Georgian and Regency eras, adding a touch of elegance and sophistication to dresses, gowns, and other formal attire. The popularity of furbelows declined in the mid-19th century as fashion trends shifted toward simpler silhouettes, but they occasionally reappeared in vintage-inspired designs in later periods.
