Funktionäppäimiä, commonly known as function keys, are special keys on a computer keyboard that perform different functions depending on the context in which they are used. Typically located at the top of the keyboard, these keys are labeled F1 through F12. Their primary purpose is to provide shortcuts for frequently used commands or to activate specific program features, thereby enhancing user efficiency and interaction with software.

The exact functionality of each function key is not universally fixed but is determined by the operating system and the application currently in use. For example, F1 is very often assigned to open a help menu or documentation. F2 might be used to rename a file or folder, while F5 is commonly used to refresh a web page or a file explorer window. Other keys like F10, F11, and F12 can have various roles, such as activating the menu bar, entering full-screen mode, or opening browser developer tools.

Many function keys can also be combined with modifier keys like Shift, Ctrl (Control), and Alt (Alternate) to unlock even more commands and shortcuts. This layered functionality allows for a vast array of operations to be performed quickly without needing to navigate through complex menus. The design and implementation of function keys aim to streamline user workflows, making them an integral part of keyboard-based computer interaction across various platforms and software environments.
