Fritidsledare

Fritidsledare is a Swedish profession for adults who supervise and develop children’s free-time activities outside regular school hours. The role is most common in fritidshem (after-school care) but can also be found in municipal youth centers, sports clubs and associations. Fritidsledare plan, organize and lead activities that may include crafts, sports, drama, music, gaming and digital media, with the aim of providing a safe, inclusive and development-oriented environment for children and youth.

Responsibilities typically include supervising daily routines, ensuring safety and well-being, supporting social interaction, addressing conflicts, and promoting participation, respect and inclusion. They collaborate with school staff, guardians and other partners, monitor attendance, and document activities and notable observations. The work often involves planning age-appropriate activities, adapting to each child’s needs, and creating a welcoming atmosphere where children can develop personal and social skills.

Work settings and hours vary. Fritidsledare are usually employed by municipalities, schools or private operators and work during after-school hours, weekday afternoons and during school holidays. The target group is primarily children in the school-age range, with some programs also serving older youth in leisure activities or holiday camps.

Qualifications commonly include education or training in child and youth work or pedagogy. Many hold a vocational fritidsledare education or equivalent, and relevant experience with children and youth is valued. Safeguarding, first aid and collaboration with families and school staff are often emphasized as part of the role.
