Fonttian

Fonttian is a constructed language and its accompanying writing system, created for use in speculative fiction and worldbuilding. It is designed to be a complete linguistic system with its own phonology, syntax, and vocabulary, intended for novels, games, and language-design experiments. In its fictional setting, Fonttian is described as the primary language of the eastern realms and is known for a storied literary tradition.

Phonology and script: Fonttian phonology features about eighteen consonants and six vowel sounds, typically represented as p, b, t, d, k, g, m, n, s, l, r, f, h, plus a glottal stop, with vowels a, e, i, o, u, and ɨ. Syllables are usually CV or CVC, with stress commonly falling on the penultimate syllable. The writing system is an abugida-like script where base signs denote consonants with an inherent /a/ vowel, and vowels are indicated by diacritics or separate vowel signs. Ligatures exist for frequent consonant clusters, and the text is written left-to-right.

Grammar and lexicon: Fonttian is primarily analytic with a relatively fixed word order of subject–verb–object. Modifiers typically follow the nouns they modify, and adjectives and numerals appear after the noun. Pronouns distinguish inclusive and exclusive forms. Verbs mark aspect through separate particles and indicate tense with temporal modifiers rather than extensive inflection. Nouns use a plural suffix, and definiteness is shown by demonstratives or determiner particles.

Usage and reception: While fictional, Fonttian has a small but active community among conlang enthusiasts. Dictionaries, grammars, and learning resources circulate in fan projects, and the language is used in various media to convey worldbuilding details.
