Folsavtúladagolás refers to the excessive intake of folic acid, the synthetic form of folate (vitamin B9). While folic acid is essential for numerous bodily functions, including DNA synthesis and repair, and red blood cell formation, consuming it in very high amounts can lead to potential adverse effects.

The primary concern associated with folic acid overdose is the masking of vitamin B12 deficiency. Folic acid can correct the anemia associated with B12 deficiency, but it does not address the neurological damage that may occur. If a B12 deficiency remains undiagnosed and untreated due to folic acid supplementation, irreversible nerve damage could develop.

Symptoms of folic acid overdose are generally not specific and may include gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, bloating, and gas. In rare cases, very high doses might also interfere with the effectiveness of certain medications, particularly anticonvulsants.

Regulatory bodies typically set upper tolerable intake levels (ULs) for folic acid to prevent such issues. For most adults, this limit is 1,000 micrograms per day from fortified foods and supplements. It is generally recommended to obtain folic acid from a balanced diet rich in leafy green vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. Pregnant women and those planning pregnancy are often advised to take folic acid supplements, but under medical supervision, to ensure appropriate dosage and avoid potential risks. If a folic acid overdose is suspected, consulting a healthcare professional is advised for proper diagnosis and management.
