Pregnant describes the condition of pregnancy, in which a person carries one or more developing embryos or fetuses inside the uterus. In humans, pregnancy typically lasts about 40 weeks from the first day of the last menstrual period, or about 38 weeks from conception. It is commonly divided into three trimesters, each associated with distinct fetal development and maternal changes.

Diagnosis is usually confirmed by a pregnancy test that detects human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in urine or blood, and is further evaluated by ultrasound and regular prenatal assessments. Early care aims to monitor fetal growth and maternal health, and to identify potential problems.

Prenatal care includes routine medical checkups, screening tests, vaccination when appropriate, and guidance on nutrition, physical activity, and avoidance of harmful substances. Folic acid supplementation before conception and in early pregnancy reduces risk of neural tube defects. A balanced diet, adequate hydration, and avoiding tobacco, alcohol, and nonessential drugs are advised.

Many signs accompany pregnancy, including a missed period, nausea, breast tenderness, fatigue, increased urinary frequency, and changes in appetite or mood. Physical changes such as weight gain and altered posture are common. While symptoms vary, most people can safely manage pregnancy with appropriate medical supervision.

Common complications include miscarriage, stillbirth, gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and preterm birth. Risk factors include advanced maternal age, multiple pregnancies, and certain health conditions. Most pregnancies end in delivery through vaginal birth or cesarean section, followed by the postpartum period and recovery care.
