Fløyel

Fløyel is the Norwegian word for velvet, a fabric characterized by a short, dense pile that gives a soft touch and a subtle, reflective surface.

It is traditionally woven by forming two layers of fabric that are joined together with extra warp yarns, which are cut apart to create the nap. Modern velvet can be made from silk, cotton, viscose (rayon), polyester, or blends, yielding different weights, drape, and luster.

Historically velvet emerged in the medieval period in the Middle East and later Europe. It was a luxury fabric for royalty and the church; with the advent of powered looms in the 19th century, velvet production became more widespread and diverse.

Common uses include evening wear, upholstery, and drapery. Care depends on fiber: silk velvet often requires dry cleaning, while cotton and synthetic velvets may be machine washable. Velvet nap can be crushed and should be brushed or steamed gently to restore the pile.

In Norwegian contexts, fløyel is valued for its rich look and texture and is used in fashion and interior design. The term covers several fibers, including silk, cotton, viscose, and synthetics; care instructions should follow the fiber type.
