Flow-oriented refers to a design and programming approach that emphasizes the movement of data through a network of processing components rather than executing a predetermined sequence of steps. In flow-oriented systems, programs are described as graphs in which nodes perform computations and edges carry data tokens between nodes. Execution is driven by the availability of data, which can enable parallel processing and dynamic reconfiguration of the processing pipeline.

Core concepts include dataflow graphs, tokens, ports and channels, and streaming data. Components are typically designed as reusable black boxes with well-defined input and output interfaces. The flow of data determines when and how components execute, reducing the need for explicit control flow statements and enabling natural concurrency in many environments. Flow-oriented design is closely related to flow-based programming and dataflow programming, with terminology and emphasis varying across implementations.

Historically, flow-oriented ideas developed from dataflow programming research and have been realized in a range of tools and ecosystems. Visual programming environments such as LabVIEW, Pure Data, and Max use flow-based representations to build signal and data processing pipelines. More general implementations, such as NoFlo and Node-RED, apply the concept to wider software development by wiring together components through graphs. Some machine learning and scientific computing frameworks employ dataflow graphs to model computations, though they are often described in terms of graphs rather than flow-oriented architectures.

Advantages of flow-oriented design include modularity, clear mapping of data processing stages, and natural suitability for parallel execution and streaming data. Challenges can involve debugging asynchronous data paths, managing state across components, and ensuring predictable performance.
